Sydney Contemporary: more visitors, smaller cheques
FAIRS · SYDNEY
Sydney Contemporary's tenth edition ran at Carriageworks from 3 to 6 September 2026, with more than 100 exhibitors and over 500 artists. Attendance reached 26,813, the highest in the fair's history (Australasian Leisure Management). Since its 2013 debut, the fair says it has generated more than A$154 million in sales.
The sales line has gone the other way. Reported sales peaked at A$23 million in 2022, the first fair back after two online years, then fell to A$21 million in 2023, A$17.5 million in 2024 and A$16 million in 2025, below the A$18 million of 2019 (The Art Newspaper). Founder Tim Etchells has pointed to more cautious buyers and to sales that close after the fair, which the totals do not count.
Dealers describe a split market. Michael Reid called it "two-speed" in 2025, with demand for decorative work down from its Covid peak while serious material still sells. The top of the 2025 fair made the point: Utopia Art Sydney reported an A$1.5 million Emily Kam Kngwarray.

What it means for collectors: a fair that grows its audience while its reported sales shrink is a fair where browsing has outrun buying. For buyers, that means more room to negotiate on mid-market work and little on the best booths.
